Slice
This assignment started with a random word and the challenge of giving it meaning through an evocative single-page typographic layout. I was given the word Slice, and at the time I wasn’t entirely sure what “evocative” meant for this project, but we were encouraged to challenge ourselves and go beyond our comfort zone.
typography
the challenge
At first, I struggled to find a direction that felt meaningful beyond the word itself.
trial and error
This uncertainty led me to explore trying photography, which I hadn’t worked with much before. I approached the word Slice in a more physical way, by gathering culinary products, then cutting each letter of the word out of meat. I took photos with a focus on texture, contrast, and detail, before bringing the images into Photoshop to experiment with the layout. This allowed the visuals to feel constructed rather than purely decorative.

The final design, paired with the typography on the following page, clearly communicates the idea I set out from the beginning. In my research and moodboarding, the culinary literature references that stood out the most felt alive and lived in, like an intentionally messy kitchen workspace. The result is evocative not just in showing the word Slice, but placing it within a lived-in environment that gives it context and spirit.
